You’re at a meeting with a potential new employer…the standard pleasantries always include a firm handshake, right? What if that same potential new boss just politely sneezed into his hand right before your interview? Furthermore, what if this same person is a carrier of the dreaded flu virus? Or the measles? Long story short, germs and other infectious particles are everywhere…while it’s virtually impossible to avoid getting sick, there are ways that you can protect yourself and your family.
Illness-Causing Germs are Everywhere!
In the first half of 2019, there were 1,123 cases of measles confirmed in 28 states. Highly contagious, the measles virus is spread mainly through coughing or sneezing. According to the CDC, the 2019 strain of the common flu will last from three to seven days in most people, with cough as one of the first symptoms to present itself. With the start of school just around the corner, more and more folks are bound to get sick. What precautions can you take to protect yourself? Start by doing the following:
Get those vaccinations.
Honestly…It’s the No. 1 thing you can do to build up your body’s immunity.
Wash your hands every chance you get!
Wash your hands as often as you can. Be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, in-between fingers and under your nails with soap and water for 20 seconds or more (singing two round of “Happy Birthday” should do it…).
Stock up on hand sanitizer. If you can’t get to soap and water, alcohol-based hand gel should be your best friend!
It may sound mean, but seriously…avoid sick people! No high-fiving or hand-shaking if you can avoid it…just give a heart-felt Hello when possible.
Keep your living / work areas clean. Sanitize doorknobs and light switches often. Avoid shared candy dishes or crowded spaces if you can. Always consider what areas could be contaminated and avoid them. If your job (or even school) involves being around a bunch of sick people, change your clothes as soon as you get home to avoid spreading germs around your home.
Keep up a healthy lifestyle. Get enough rest, eat healthy foods, don’t smoke and keep your allergies in check so that your upper respiratory system isn’t already compromised when it’s time to fight off those germs.
